Inauguration Day

Today in the United States, we inaugurated our 44th President Barack Obama.  It was a special day for me, for my own personal reason.

He was elected on November 4th, 2008- the same day I decided it was time to really get serious about getting rid of my debt.

I was behind on payments and getting phone calls from a credit card company.  I was scheduled to work an all night shift that night so I should have slept most of the day.  I couldn’t sleep!  I thought maybe it was because I was thinking about the election.  I had planned to sleep until 2 or 3 pm and then go vote, but I couldn’t sleep at all.  By 11:00 am, I convinced myself that if I went and voted, I’d get it off my mind and then could sleep.  It didn’t work,  I just lied in bed thinking about how Obama was about to make history.  He campaigned about how we needed change- change we could believe in.

I knew what needed to change and it was the way I handled my finances.  It was that day that I added all my bills and started looking for ways to cut them.  It was that day that I started looking into refinancing my home.

I couldn’t help but to think about that day today as I watched him taking the oath.  I wonder if I’ll always associate his election with my quest to become debt free.  He has his hands full as he hopes to improve the nations economy.  I have my hands full trying to improve my own.  Hopefully, four years from now, we will both have had great success.
