Trying To Save With My New Thermostat

Yesterday, I bought a new programmable thermostat and installed it in about 30 minutes.

I was inspired by getting one of the biggest electricity bills I’ve ever had.

My hope is that by setting the thermostat to let the house stay pretty cool all day when no one is here and then heating it up right before we get home, we will see some savings on our electric bill.  The package claims the thermostt can save you up to 33% on your bill.  If that’s the case, it’ll pay for itself in a month or two and I’ll be kicking myself for not doing it sooner.

Some of the thermostats I looked at allow you to set one program for Monday-Friday and one for the weekend.  They are called a 5-2 thermostat.  Others let you set one program for Monday-Thursday, one for Saturday and one for Sunday.  It was called the 5-1-1.  I bought one that allows you to program each day of the week seperately.  It’s called the 7 Day thermostat.  It lets you group days together if the settings will be the same for each of them.

Right now I have Monday-Thursday all the same, but Friday is different since my wife doesn’t work Fridays so it’ll need to keep the house warmer that day.  I have the weekend as another setting, pretty much like Friday except I have our wakeup time later.  I have the thermostat set to run the heater less at night when we are asleep under the blankets and to warm up around our wake up time.

I don’t have a programmable thermostat, but I do turn the temperature way down on mine when I leave for work. Then I turn it up a few degrees when I get home. This month, I decided to turn down my “home” temperature by 3 degrees, so we’ll see what kind of difference that makes this month…
